Hi

Me and my husband are due to move to Charlotte in the fall. We are looking for somewhere safe and not too far a distance to travel to the airport. We have currently seen a place not far from Albermarle Rd however on googling reviews everybody keeps saying to avoid this area but not quite why?

Can anybody recommend safe areas of Charlotte to move to at a decent price as we will be renting for the first year.
Also we are expecting our first child and as I will be new to the area, I am concerned of places to live as want to be able to take my baby out for walks and explore the area and meet new friends without constantly looking over my shoulder.

Please help.

It's hard to answer without knowing your budget. Albemarle Rd is quite a ways from the airport and nowhere along it's entire length would I feel safe walking by myself. My son recently bought a small house in Starmount. It is a fairly large neighborhood of 60's era homes not far from the airport. The downside is that one side of the neighborhood is bordered by South Blvd...fair amount of crime along that road, but fortunately the crime doesn't seem to creep into the neighborhood itself. I went on a long walk there yesterday and felt perfectly safe.

My advice, is prioritize conveience to the job, what you can afford, and simply put crime statistics out of your mind. Where-ever you move, there are other neighbors nearby too, and they just live their lives without thinking about crime all the time.

Schools won't matter for a while if your child is so young. You have time to research school districts and move in a few more years.

As you do your research, keep in mind that there are many posters on these boards who believe you will be murdered if you set foot outside of Ballantyne or Waxhaw. Take the hand-wringing about crime with a big ol' grain of salt.

There will be posters that insist all of Charlotte is safe. Please check the crime maps yourself and see where you would feel comfortable. You can input the address specifically as well. Around the airport there are iffy areas. But just as there iffy areas, there are some really nice ones too. I would do a forum search for West Charlotte/Airport areas on here. Good luck with both the baby and move!

I would suggest including Belmont/Mt.Holly in your search as well. They are both in Gaston County, but very close to the airport. Also the Steele Creek outside of I-485 (SW section of town) is nice as well.

Believing that too many people assume older or mixed income neighborhoods are inherently dangerous is not the same as denying there are unsafe parts of the city

??? I am talking of posters that insist Charlotte is all safe, where did I mention older or mixed income? I live in both now and consider my area very safe.
