Out of curiosity, does anyone know the latest on the new outlet mall? I drove by the intended area the other day and it didn't look like they had broken ground yet. I thought the mall was supposed to open next summer.

I hope plans to widen hwy 160 are also in the works. Driving down that road at the wrong time can be a nightmare and an outlet mall will only make things worse.

Hm... I guess it's still in the planning stages. Even at this point, I'm not sure if grand opening by next summer is feasible (but I could be wrong).

It starts slowly, but go by in about a month and it'll be crazy...

The wet summer has slowed the process, but it will open on time.

I was told a couple of months ago that the project was still on schedule for a 2014 opening. The parties still had some agreements to make and papers to sign. They at least have started clearing trees, now. The developers will me making several road improvements around the mall, including traffic signals at the I-485 ramps.

The MPO is working on ranking projects for their 30 year plan. They released the first ranking last week. Two Hwy 160/Steele Creek Road widening projects (north of Hwy 49 and south of Hwy 49) were ranked high enough (#36 and #44 respectively) to have a good chance of making the 30 year plan this time. But that won't mean anything other than the widening would be expected to occur in the next 30 years. Further evaluations may move the projects up. We'll have to see. Looks like we're going to have to wait a long time to see 4 lanes on Hwy 160.

The rankings aren't posted yet, but should be here soon: Long Range / Metropolitan Transportation Plan | MUMPO

While the developer won't name names on any of the future tenants...Cole Haan appears to be one of them.

The following is an excerpt from the Lake Wylie Pilot:

The Charlotte Premium Outlets project at N.C. 160 and I-485 is “100 percent leased” with several signed tenants surrounding it.

Thomas would not name the new tenants.

The outlet project is a $100 million investment set to bring more than 900 jobs to the area. It’s a partnership between Tanger Factory Outlet Centers and Simon Property Group and is set to open by Aug. 1. It also includes more than $8 million in road improvements, mainly at eight new intersections.

“You’ll see some significant improvements take place this spring and summer,” Thomas said.

Childress-Klein is bringing tenants to surrounding parcels. Thomas said he has signed a “national hotel, two sit-down restaurants and a petroleum operation” with conversations ongoing for more restaurants.

Thomas said, with the project leased out several months before opening, it’s a sign the project will succeed.

“That is some indication of the interest and demand,” he said.
