I seem to remember hearing from more than one source the Mecklinberg county taxes are quite high when compared to other neighboring counties. Is this true?

We're looking at Gaston, Cabarrus, and Iredell counties because of this, but keep seeing places pop up in Matthews that we like but are just not exploring because of the county.

Does anyone have some insight? I'm talking property and vehicle taxes primarily - but I may be missing something.

Thank you!

So if you are in town or city limits, you add the city taxes to the county taxes, correct?

Yes, in some areas if you are in the county but not the city you may also have to add for police.

For insatnce I am in mecklenburg county but not part of city of Charlotte

So mine for instance.

MECK PROPERTY TAX .8387
POLICE DIST TAX .1762

Giving a total off 1.0149

As I am not in a city I have to pay for my garbage, end result at the end of the year I am approx $250 better off, I expect to be annexed into Charlotte in 2011, I know it will not be before then.
