Planning a visit to Charlotte in November. Need a recomendation for a hotel in or near downtown that is within safe walking distance to shopping, restraunts, etc. We're visiting to see a football game and check out The Charlotte area as a possible retirement location. We prefer walking the city so would like a hotel in a safe area within easy walking distance to everything. Suggestions on things to do are welcome as well.
Thanks!

If you stay in Uptown Charlotte, you'll have plenty of restaurants within walking distance. There is absolutely NO shopping within walking distance of uptown Charlotte on the weekends, unless you consider CVS and Walgreens to be good shopping.

Well a hotel in Uptown (downtown) will provide you with access to restaurants and cultural venues, but there's no street retail scene there so you'd still have to drive to another part of the city for that (such as SouthPark). There's a little retail bottled-up inside the Overstreet Mall though, but nothing substantial.

I'd still recommend Uptown in which to stay since you'll be attending a football game and will have easy access to places like the Levine Center for the Arts, EpiCenter, Museum of the New South, Discovery Center, etc. but since you'll be retiring to Charlotte, I still think you'll need a car to check out other parts of the city that would probably appeal to you such as the neighborhoods surrounding Uptown (South End, Dilworth, Plaza-Midwood, etc.), the lake communities, etc.

Hotels like the Westin or Marriott Courtyard are close enough to both BOA Stadium and Uptown sites of interest.

I'd suggest checking out special events that may be going on that weekend. Otherwise definitely check out these two:

Levine Center for the Arts - About
Levine Museum of the New South

There's Hilton Garden Inn, Residence Inn, or Courtyard by Marriott. You meant one of those

We booked the Marriot! The choices were dwindling for the dates we wanted as a few we called were all booked. We've got tickets to the Pats / Panthers game and we'll be renting a car for some sightseeing. We're looking forward to visiting Charlotte and surrounding areas. Thanks!

Enjoy your stay in Uptown. I'd suggest walking to the cultural campus (where the museums are in Uptown): there's the Bechtler, Ganntt, Mint, and Knight Theater all right there in the same spot, beside the Duke Energy building. There's also a fantastic hidden gem in Fourth Ward called Alexander Michael's - it's really tucked away on a neighborhood street but worth looking for. While there, you might check out the McColl Center - it's a practicing artist-in-residence studio within a former church. Really stunning, and unique to Charlotte.

Finally, I'd suggest taking a quick trip past Uptown (you can take the Blue Line, but it's absolutely walkable, too) - visit East Blvd, where there are restaurants and independent shops. Plus, it's a beautiful place to walk around and enjoy CLT's weather. At the end of East you'll find Freedom Park, the city's main and central park. It's really lovely. And beyond that there's Myers Park, which is an old and wealthy neighborhood tucked beneath some of the most beautiful trees in the region. Walking around in MP is really something.

Good luck and enjoy!
