Hi. I am recently divorced with a 13 year old son. I want to move to NC, and visited friends there recently. Before moving, I am researching areas that would work best for my son and myself. I really like Matthews for the schools. I also like Harrisburg because I have a friend living there who would be a great support for us. In. Looking at the threads, I always see things like "stay away from poor, ghetto areas, etc". That, by itself is not helpful. I am a African American, professor and professional. So I am looking for communities that are diverse, well maintained and good high schools where my son can continue playing lacrosse and football. Not sure where I will work since I am hoping to leave by june2014, so job hunting 1year out is unrealistic. Please share your thoughts on what you think would work best for us. I appreciate your honest feedback.

I'd suggest re-posting your question in the Charlotte sub-forum for better answers. Matthews is probably a good choice, but I think you should do some searches about "African-Americans" and "Charlotte suburbs". Also note that the town profile on the main part of C-D are helpful. For example, I note that Matthews has slightly a slightly higher AA population (about 12.5%) versus Harrisburg (about 9%).

Matthews would be a decent choice if you're trying to raise him in an environment that is "mixed" demographically, but not a "white flight" area or majority low income.
