I've searched and can't find specific recommendations. I like the buffet because it lets me try a variety of things I may not normally keep at home. I don't mind gorging myself occasionally either. I'm willing to spend a few bucks, but don't want to wear a tie to breakfast or drive halfway across the city. Golden Corral is (barely) OK, but I'd like to find at least the next level up in food quality.

Suggestions?

It's not purely breakfast but I highly recommend Upstream's brunch. (Sundays only.)

Waldhorn in Pineville. We go there a few times a year and it's fantastic. They have your typical German fare with sausage and schnitzel along with eggs to order and other breakfast favorites. Plus you can wash it all down with a tall German beer!

Pike's in South End. Not sure if it is only weekends, but it is fantastic.

Waldhorn is, but it is a brunch buffet. Shoney's is the only "true" breakfast one I know of.

Ya, there are no more buffets. There's only Ru Sans, CiCi's, Hibachi Buffet, Tin Tin, Golden Corral, Super China Buffet, Ichiban Buffet, just from the top of my head. Not to mention the three Brazillian places and all the lunch/brunch buffets. There are no more buffets.
