I would say Charlotte is cosmopolitan according to Southern tradition. It has moved away from the "old south" image and has become more welcoming to people of other cultures. It is not as cosmopolitan as New York. But that is just my opnion.

Wow! There are regional interpretation of cosmopolitan? It seems like just yesterday that airplanes were diverted if they had foreigners or other weirdos on them. LOL. Glad that you feel Charlotte is adhering to the "southern tradition" of cosmopolitan. I guess Atlanta is abiding to the "southern tradition" as well? That should make us all proud.

This does not mean it cannot have an internation flavor, arts, music, corporations, etc. But if you asked people outside of the SE to name Cosmo cities, I don't think Charlotte would arise. Ask people outside the US, have you heard of Charlotte? I believe you have to have something that makes you stand out, and I don't mean to be offensive in any way, but Nascar is what Charlotte is known for in a lot of areas, NASCAR has stereotypes galore around it. I think Phoenix is in a similar situation. People think of Phoenix has a Cowboy town, with Cacti and Sand (ok lots of sand). On the internaional scene, lets look at Cities like NY, Dubai, London, Sydney, Hong Kong... yes these are very BIG cities but I think in some regards you have to be to be judged on the international level. Anyway.. My opinion was stated.. you may disagree, but Until they have a CSI or a Law and Order based here, we aren't cosmo.

I know that your intentions are good, but you are wrong about Charlotte's perception overseas. In England, everyone has heard of Charlotte. They have not heard of NASCAR. They are aware that Charlotte headquarters Bank of America and that there is an internationa airport there. Additionaly, there have been specials on BBC about Charlotte depicting it as a booming American city. Americans are not aware of many things including geography. Ask an American in any state in the U.S. and they will think that Charlotte is Charleston or Charlottesville. Yes, Charlotte is an international level city but not on the level with London, NYC, Sydney, etc. We need to get out of the denial stage. I have to say that your perception of Charlotte as a "rural southern city" seems odd. I live in Cornelius and really enjoy seeing a farmhouse since they are such a rare thing to see in the Charlotte area.

By regional I mean compared to cities in southern geographic region of the United States of AMerica. Cities such as Jacksonville, Nashville, Birmingham, Montgomerey, Knoxville, Chattanooga, etc., I think Charlotte does have a cosmopolitan flair to it compared to the others. But is it NYC, London, Barcelona, and some others? No...not yet.

The OP has never come back to clafify or comment so I guess it was not nearly as imortant a question to him as it was to everyone else. I wonder how long he stayed amused and at what point he started yawning?

John and Doorway - I am w/ you all. This thread was beaten to death 100 posts ago (or more). I hated to see the thing revived again!
The topic is subjective. And in the end . . . we are all just living our lives here!!! As long as we residents are finding what we need to have a full, enjoyable life - who the heck cares if Charlotte is seen as "cosmopolitan?"
