I just got the scoop on new US Airways service for the Summer of 2014.

Starting next summer US Airways will offer flights to:

Barcelona. Airbus A333-200. Dept: 635pm Arv: 910am. 8hrs35mins

Brussels. Boeing 767. Dept: 430p Arv: 7am 8hrs30mins

Lisbon. Boeing 757. Dept: 825pm Arv: 920am 7hrs 55mins

Manchester, Boeing 757. Dept: 835pm Arv: 930am 7hrs 55mins.

It looks like US Airways is also bringing back Madrid, Rome, and Dublin as well for the summer. Those are in addition to year round service to Frankfurt, London, and Paris.

I was just in Madrid and Rome, it was pretty cool seeing Charlotte on the departure board right next to cities from all over the world.

Great news!

Since our airport is expanding, I expect more international flights in the future.

PS: we also have all year direct flight to Munich with Lufthansa.

The Lufthansa service may be eliminated once US Airways merges with American since they will no longer be a member of the Star Alliance (as Lufthansa is).

That is awesome, do you know if these are summer only flights and if so when would they start?

I hope we keep Lufthansa, I prefer it to USAir/American and pretty sure most others who travel to Europe couple of times a year have same preference (at minimum for the rest of the connections that Lufthansa offers in Europe).

They are seasonal flights. Barcelona, Lisbon and Manchester start 5/23/14 and Brussels 6/5/14. Not sure of the end date but when I flew to Madrid on 9/17 it was one of the last flights of the summer from CLT. It looks like 10/26 is the last flight from Rome to Charlotte for the season. I suspect the duration of the new flights will be similar.

I've seen lots of speculation about Lufthansa pulling out if the merger goes through. I think they will try to stick it out if at all possible. LH has served CLT for years. There is a huge base of Star Alliance frequent flyers who will remain loyal to Star for awhile. Time will tell!

Cool. I have been planning on going to the Netherlands to visit a friend who lives closer to the airport in Brussels. This would be awesome. Now I hope the price isn't outrageous.

The problem for Lufthansa is that most of the German flyers into Charlotte transfer on to other US cities via the Star Alliance. If USAirways is no longer a member they won't be able to stay within the alliance/code sharing and may not be able to fill the plane. I've heard speculation that they would try to keep the service with a smaller plane - I hope so.
