I called the one close to me and whew they were pricey. Wanted $99 just to dismantle it to see what's wrong. But hey they will oil it while they are at it..yeah no thanks.
Anyone know of a good one? I often travel to Fort Mill/Indian Land/Indian Trail/Stallings/Ballantyne/Pineville/Matthews/Weddington areas. It's for a White brand. (Viking/Husqrvna I think)

I was going to give you the name of two of the best in Charlotte. But both of them will charge a similar fee to find out what's wrong, so I suppose there's no reason to pass them along.
It's called a diagnostic fee, and most reputable companies that do repairs of any kind charge it to figure out what is wrong, BTW.

I don't mind a fee, but if it's starting at $99, that's half what I paid for it new a few years ago. I guess I have to see what they cost nowadays and see if it's worth fixing.

You may know this but what you paid for it has no bearing on what it costs to fix. They charge the same amount to fix the $1000 and $1500 machines they sell, because it takes the exact same amount of work to repair any of those machines. It's a bit more to fix the computer based big dollar machines. Plus, when my buddies repair a machine, it will likely sew better than it ever has before. They go through it and make the adjustments they'd make on one of their machines when purchased new. Most machines sew better than they did when new after these adjustments are made. That of course depends on what the machine is capable of.
Much like basic DVD or Blu-ray players, basic cell phones, entry level TVs, and $30 toasters, a $200 sewing machine is considered to be a throwaway product. Unless the fix is obvious and simple, it's unlikely you will get it repaired for less than $100. I've been around the business enough to see that it's hardly worth anyone's time to get into your machine for less than that.
No one wants to hear that, but it's a fact. Sorry.

Turned out my garage sale find is a good brand after all. So I will pay to repair it. As for those higher end computer fangled sewing machine, not for me. I prefer simple and straightforward. Sent you a DM. Thanks for your input, it was well said.
