According to the student count posted today, Parkwood is at 865- leaving 135 slots until they are at capacity. That's about 100 more students than projected. Forest Hills is about 100 students under projection. What's next, sending kids there?
It's idiotic to keep thinking that because there are a few open seats at schools 10, 20, 30 miles away, we don't have to build new schools in the areas where building booms are taking place. I've lived through urban sprawl in So Cal and Az for the past 40 years and never experienced anything like this. They would close underutilized schools the same year they would open new ones in crowded areas. New schools were typically at 65% capacity for the first few years, allowing an open-enrollment option for the families in the older areas who were interested enough to transport their kids.
Why doesn't the state (county?) require developers to contribute to infrastructure when they apply to build? Off topic, but I keep hearing about a water shortage, but didn't the county recently allow a huge development planned for Antioch church rd to be re zoned R20 instead of R40? Double the density and double the children (and water usage)
Becca91 and others- so sorry! I posted late last night on my phone and got the PMS and PHS numbers wrong! I posted a correction this morning but it disappeared into cyberspace. The numbers are down from the projections, not up!

someone said redistricting always comes after capping...is this true?
Yes, per the notes from the BOE meeting that took place last week. They will cap for this year, then put forth a redistricting plan for next year based on the roof top report that is coming in around December.
Where did you get that count for Parkwood? The 20 day enrollment for Parkwood Middle was 690 - they went up to 865 in 2 months - not sure how that would happen.

Board policy states that if your kid is supposed to go to a school that is above a 120% capacity (like Kensington), you can request for them to then go to a school that is below 110% capacity (Marvin is like at 79%). So couldn't new Kensington residents just request for their kid to be sent to Marvin instead of Waxhaw?? Not sure why they didn't choose Marvin instead of Waxhaw to begin with, its closer and parents wouldn't be so upset.

Interesting comment. But if your assigned school is now Parkwood, you may not be able to make that request. Not sure how they would handle this...
