No HOA, but behind a lattice fence.

In our garage and have never had an issue with it smelling up our house.

Fortunately our HOA isn't that awful so no special provision with location. I mean it's a garbage can, we all have them and we all put our trash in them, why keep it inside your house (garage)? Not knocking the people above at all, more of an indictment of how silly HOA rules are around this sort of thing IMO. If I were forced to "hide" it, I would take one of the above suggestions and create a little alcove spot behind the house where I could still use it but not stink up my house/garage.

What are you people putting in your trash that makes it stink so badly? I understand diapers or cat litter. I've kept my cans in the garage for 13 years and never had an issue of odor.

That may be a rhetorical question, since I actually don't really want to know why y'all are stinky.

My opinion is that trash cans should not be seen outside of the home except on trash day. Just because we all have them doesn't make them any less...trashy.

Food. I purchase whole sides and trim/butcher them down. Seafood. Etc. I bleach out my cans once a month in the Summer. I just can't imagine with the heat of the garage having the garbage in there. Blech!

Sometimes I'll keep bad stuff in the fridge in the summer until Weds because if it is cold, it won't smell like it will in the oven that is my garage.
I've been down that road. It's stupid for me to knowingly to keep spoiled food in the refrigerator, but I wait until trash day to get rid of it.

We have HOA, keep in garage. If I have items that are really smelly, I take to trash nearby a trash bin.
