My fiance and I are in Northern NJ (suburbs of NYC) and we are looking to relocate. We want a warmer climate, less traffic, less stress, more affordable housing. A simpler lifestyle.
We've always liked NC and think Charlotte or the research triangle area would be a good fit, but we're suburb people.
We want a single family home with a yard. Some local shopping options but don't mind having to travel up to an hour to be in the city. We do not want children so schools aren't really important. We have up to $150k in cash to spend on a home and we do not want a mortgage.
I am in nearly the same boat as you (Coming from NYC, looking into Charlotte, similar budget, etc...) and people have suggested Indian Trail, Mint Hill, and some other areas. I had the chance to visit these two areas including Matthews this week and my wife and I loved them. We drove around in Union County and it was awesome.
We stayed in Concord and we loved Concord as well. I think you might find Concord a very nice place for you too.
Do you know how many bedrooms you are looking for? I am looking for at least four, so that makes my case a little more challenging for my budget. However, I assume that you do not want that many rooms so you should be fine.
Check out the Starmount neighborhood in Charlotte. It is not far from light rail, shopping, downtown, and you can definitely find something in that price range there.
Do not buy close to South Blvd or near the apartments on the Southwest side of the neighborhood.
Based on the Union County Schools redistricting thread you should be able to get a great deal in UC!
