---Charlotte council eyes first step in Google Fiber installation

----Charlotte City Council is expected to vote tonight on whether to authorize an agreement with Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) on the installation of 21 "fiber huts" throughout the city.

The network huts are "an essential piece of fiber infrastructure" and will be placed on city-owned property, according to the council's agenda. Google is seeking a 20-year lease on the sites.

Poll
Will you make the switch to Google Fiber?
Placement of the 1,400-square-foot huts — substations for Google's ultra-fast Internet and TV service — will mark one of the first steps in the rollout of Google Fiber in the Queen City. The council agenda indicates each hut site will generate $2,800 in annual revenue for the city, or $56,000 over the course of the 20-year agreement.

The California-based tech giant is planning to install 6,000 miles of fiber-optic cable and related equipment over the next two years, which will require the city to add personnel to help with the permitting and inspection workload, according to the agenda.

Google announced in January that it would bring Fiber to Charlotte, Raleigh, Atlanta and Nashville, Tenn., in its next round of expansion.

Forgive me if this has been asked already, but when they say it is coming to Charlotte, does that include surrounding towns for residential use? (i.e Huntersville, Concord, Mooresville, etc).

Thanks.

Yeah Charlotte only at this time. Scroll back a few pages for links on giving your email address for residential updates.

Anyone know if actual work has begun? Hiring installers etc? Curious as to which contractor they are using locally.
