So, we are moving back to the CLT area. I lived here as a child and grew up in NC and are moving back to CLT. We would like to find a place that is a reasonable commute to the University and Ballantyne areas where we could get some land--20-30 acres, but less or more would work--and build a house.
We were thinking Union County would be a good fit, but having looked around, I am not so sure. We are moving from northern NJ, and frankly Union seems to be filled with NJ transplants, which is not our first choice. We spent some time having lunch with friends in Waxhaw and it looked like the Real Housewives of NJ and I swear about half the guys driving around look like "The Situation".
Am I wrong about Union County? Is there any other areas to consider that are a little less Jersey? We have some great friends in NJ, but I was hoping for an area that was a little more local folks.
I'm not sure what you'd consider a reasonable commute, but perhaps somewhere towards Mint Hill & Midland? What's your budget?
That is a good question. The answer is, it depends, I guess. I have had a commute of over an hour before but it was on pretty country roads until the very end and never felt very bad. OTOH, I have commuted 20 minutes in bumper to bumper stop and go traffic and it was much worse.
I would say I could handle 45 minutes to an hour, if necessary and my wife about 1/2 that--although she won't be driving in every day and definitely not during rush hour.

Finding 20-30 acres within an easy commute will be difficult unless you are willing to spend over a half a million easy and more than likely million plus. Just wanting to know your expectations
20-30 acres there is no such thing as a easy commute from Ballantyne to University. That pretty much does not exist. Not unless your coming in with a few million lol. Why not buy some land near the University if that's where you will be working? Concord/Kannapolis? Harrisburg? Might be easier to find.

Yes. That is the trade off, isn't it. While I would like 30 acres in Myers Park, that ain't happening, so it is a land to commute tradeoff to a certain extent. I have some sense of the market from looking around and that is the range we are thinking--although not so much on the 'plus'--depending on what we get for it.

One will be going to the University, the other to Ballantyne. Ballantyne would be more like a real commute while University would not be every day and have a lot of flexibility to miss rush hour.
We have looked outside of Concord--there are some nice areas there as well.
ahh ok gotcha. Dead smack in the middle of east side 485 would work then. Maybe something off 218 or Laywers Rd. Punch in Emerald Lake Golf club on Zillow and maybe draw a parameter 10 miles around it and see what type of land is available out there. The further you get from 485 the more land available should open up.
