oh yes, I booked a ticket to fly to Dallas 6 days before the flight and it was $1500.. when I checked if I fly out of Greenville, SC it was $900. Doesn't make sense but all the tickets I buy from Charlotte are more expensive than any other location I used to fly out of.
A round-trip domestic ticket from Charlotte Douglas averaged $405.50 during the fourth quarter, up 0.5 percent from the same quarter a year ago. Charlotte Douglas was the 34th most expensive airport from which to fly, out of the nation's top 100 airports.[LEFT]

I was looking into possibly flying one way to Philadelphia the middle of May. I figured, hey hub to hub, no problem. Here is what I found:
USAir flight 1286 (I think), leaving CLT at 9am to PHL - $435.50 fees included.
BUT...............
USAir flying to BWI through PHL with the first leg being the very same flight - $105.50 fees included.
Yep, that's right. More than 75% less using the very same flight to PHL, but changing planes and continuing on to BWI. Smart person just uses a carry on and gets off when it lands in Philly! And yes I double checked and they were both for a one way flight. No, I'm still not taking the flight as I'm not fond of flying anyhow, was just curious.
Totally ridiculous. And they wonder why people hate the airlines. Just goes to show that competition is a good thing when it comes to flying.

Hub to Hub is often expensive regardless of the airline or airport.
You can get a direct flight on USAir to BWI for $90-100, it's only about a 1.5 hour drive from BWI to PHL.
You really need to shop. If you shop Orbitz or Travelocity, (or any other third party) be sure to clear your cookies between visits, and limit your visits to check up on prices. The websites count hits and number of times a customer visits, both of which drive the price up. The reasoning is that if a particular flight draws more interest, there will be more competition for seats. (It's true. That's one of the functions of a cookie in internet marketing).
If all else fails, call the carrier's ticket counter. Sometimes the airline actually beat the third parties such as Orbitz and Travelocity and Cheap-o Air.
Charlotte is a "single hub fortress". This means very high prices for the locals. Why? Because the airline can.
