Exactly, that's just part of the costs of doing business, ANY business is going to have thieves and/or freeloaders. The issue is whether it is cheaper to use turnstiles or people to try to decrease that as much as possible.

Would you rather pay more now so that they can install turnstiles NOW or pay a little less for a while until they determine that it will be cost effective to put in some sort of security device? Either way you are going to be paying for it.

We have had light rail in Portland for almost 22 years now, THe honor system is still in place here and is still a joke, an insult to everyone that buys tickets, and monthly passes. We have so many that ride free, believe me one can tell the ones riding free here. Charlotte is no Portland, different mindset, a much better business climate. I cannot see Charlotte allowing what Portland has for all these years. Allowing all these freeloaders to ride free while the rest of us pay as much as $76.00 a month for a pass to ride these trains here. If Charlotte wants their light rail to be a success and be extended to other areas of the metro area they are going to have to please the public. Pleasing means making sure everyone is paying their fair share for their ride, and that the tranist people are interested in enforcing that as well as providing safety and security. All of these are sadly lacking on Portland's light rail, don't let our mistakes be Charlottes. Honor systems do not work at least in Portland they don't.

They need to fix those machines. I don't know why they aren't working here, but they goota get fixed. They should also allow retail establishments to sell tickets for the train. Many other cities with rail systems do this. It gets people into the stores.

I saw this article and laughed. Most knew this was coming.

Also, I don't think the large majority of freeloaders aren't paying because some machines don't work. I think its because many riders don't see any attendants checking and feel they can just ride for free.

Its very simple.

1. Fix the machines.
2. Make it MANDATORY that there is at least 1 attendant at every station.
3. Figure out a system to check for tickets.

This is not brain surgery. Other major metros do it. This should not be that difficult.

That calibre of people would steal a $1.30 ride. They deserve what they get if they get caught! $50 fine! Wouldn't $1.30 be much cheaper!

It came a lot quicker than you predicted, only 6 weeks.

As for 7-4, you keep talking about a $50 ticket. The article says the inspectors have not been doing their jobs since the beginning and that CATS had planned a grace period.

Articles I have seen said there are checkers. Also riders say the same thing. This is hear say!

If you can't afford $1.30 then don't go anywhere near the Light Rail!

They are being leniant cuz the ticket machines aren't working. I have made 2 roundtrips with no sign of an inspector. on Buffalo's metro rail's paid part, I was checked maybe 1 out of ten times.
