TD Bank is about to anchor a new 1,250 foot office tower, one of about ten towers over 1,000 feet which are under construction in NY. Considering that Charlotte is the No. 2 banking center in the US, how come they're not building that tower here? Rent in the new tower, called 1 Vanderbilt, will be much more expensive than it would be here.
What can we do to attract more banking business here?

The 1,250' figure has been cited in several other articles in Dec when the tower was first proposed and before TD signed on. (They're going to occupy several hundred thousand square feet of new office space in NY -- not branches.) They're shifting their US HQ from a Phllly suburb in NJ to NYC, where they current have a de minimis amount of office space. They should have come to Charlotte instead.
What do we need to do to attract such business?

So, the #2 banking center 'lost out' to the #1 banking center and the sky is falling? It's not like it's being built in Fayetteville for goodness sake.

"TD Bank is headquartered in Toronto (pictured), but several US branches will be consolidated into the new location in Midtown Manhattan. President and CEO of TD Bank Ed Clark, right." Later in the article it specifies "divisions," however I skimmed the article, specifically looking for the 1250' quote, after reading it was only 65 stories tall.
I don't think there's any particular reason for a major bank HQ to move here, other than lower rents.

I think there’s a bit of hyperbole in your comments. Toyota actually considered Charlotte. Your article doesn’t say Charlotte was in the running for that TD expansion.
When I read your heading I thought you were referring to this announcement last year TD Bank creating 1,600 jobs in South Carolina - BusinessWeek On first glance, one might wonder why they choose Greenville instead of Charlotte given their proximity. But the reason is because TD bought South Financial Group which was based in Greenville. It’s kind of unreasonable to think Charlotte will attract every single corporate relocation. Charlotte’s done pretty well recently with announcements from MetLife, AIG, Electrolux and others. And recent real estate transactions suggest there’s big new coming soon from TIAA CREF and Babson/Mass Mutual also. Given the way the city and the economy are rolling now, it’s just a matter of time before there’s another 1,000 job announcement on the scale of what MetLife did here. Patience grasshopper, LOL!!

Are you seriously that deficient in understanding Econ growth? What did we get this week? The HQ for an asset management firm with over $200b......what have we gotten recently, 1,500 MetLife jobs.
Interesting that you bring up TM.....I don't recall them considering NYC, what is the problem.
As for TD, they don't have a meaningful presence in Charlotte on the retail or commercial side.....would have been surprised to see them.
However, not surprised to see TIAA Creaf expanding, US Bank expanding, Citgo Funds expanding, WFC's largest employment center....Charlotte. And, on top of that, we are among the fastest growing cities in the country in population AND job growth, read that again.
