The arts magnet is a lottery open to all kids in the district. There is an audition but it's not very competitive. Below is a link to the lottery results for all magnet. You can see NWSA (arts) has no waiting list. The really competitive schools are IB middle schools (Piedmont and Randolph are fantastic!!) as well as Montessori elementary schools and the Language Immersion school Waddell (which you could consider for your youngest only as they only accept new students in K-1). There are shuttle buses to the magnets from various locations.

Wow - thanks so much for this information. As much as I like the idea of an arts magnet, what you have told me makes me wonder about the quality of the school (why isn't it harder to get in? why isn't there a waiting list?). Maybe most parents are just hyper-focused on scores and academic super-achievement. My kiddo is no slouch academically, but I don't want him to focus on math, etc. to the exclusion of his artistic pursuits. Anyhow, thanks again!

My daughter goes to the NWSA since 10th grade. It's a great atmosphere with a lot of diverse talented kids. Plus it's a small school where you know everyone in your grade. However I have been very unhappy with the teaching quality in math and science. To be fair, this is not a strong point for artsy students, but in my opinion - all the more reason to have excellent teachers in the left brain pursuits.
It's located in a very low-income neighborhood which may turn off some suburban parents - but that aspect does not bother us.
