I forgot what the actual protocol was, but there is a highway/property tax that you have to pay on your vehicles when you register them. I think it was 3% of the depreciated value of your vehicle Anyway, we have a 2005 Honda SUV and a 2003 Acura and the two combined came out to over $400, and the registration is done every year.

Now that's something else that I can't quite figure out. A friend of mine that lives in Raleigh told me that the tax is every year but the cost would also go down every year because your car depreciates in value. But, we have friends in Winston-Salem that told us it's only a one time tax and you would just have to pay the standard registration fee every year. So for anyone out there that has moved to NC and has been here at least 2 years, what has been your experience with registering your vehicle?
