Okay. I just registered our vehicles here in NC from out of state. But is it common that they keep the titles to your car? When I was done I went back in and told the woman that she forgot to give me the titles back. She told me that they keep them and that I would be getting new titles in 3-5 weeks? Is that actually correct? That means that if I wanted to sell my vehicles, I couldn't until I got my new titles, or have to chase around to get a copy of them. What does the title actually have anything to do with the registration, other than showing proof of ownership? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My husband just got it confirmed from someone that moved here from NJ. It is common practice for DMV here to take the title; something with the fact that the registration has to coincide with the title. Not sure but it seems to be correct. Thanks!

They'll send you new NC titles in 3-5 weeks. The titles from the other state have no use anymore.

I got our titles in the mail in about 2 weeks actually. I was quite surprised they were that fast!

Maryland does the same thing. They keep the title then sends you a new one with a lien on it, if any. Common in some states but not all, PA does not do this.

No thanks. I already laid out over $400 to register both vehicles and their other fees. I guess I'll wait it out to get the titles.

Thanks!

Default $400 in fees?

I'm getting ready to move to North Carolina. $400 in fees to register sounds expensive. How many cars and how new were they? Do they charge a percentage? I thought I would pay a registration fee and when the year went by I would pay a registration fee with the property tax. What gives?
