As far as I know, Goodwill has a computer store that will erase the hard drive, including OS, before resale.

best place to donate anything to is the Crisis Assistance Ministry. Yes they clean up hard drives and computers.

I agree, and Goodwill be next. Good thing about Crisis is the things go directly to those who need it. With computers and the goodwill though it fits because they use some to train people who need it and sell other ones at their Freedom dr store.

I just bought my wife a new computer for Christmas and I will donate the old one....Does anyone know if they dump your hard-drive right there...or does anyone know of an online tool that you can download....I have probably about 5 years of personal docs on there. Maybe, I should remove the hard drive and donate it? If I did....do you know if they would even want it?

deleting/reformatting isn't enough as the data is still there, you need to basically fill the hard drive with new data to overwrite the old stuff and then wipe that data, to be safe.

We pulled out the hard drive entirely before donating to Goodwill. They will take the computer without it.

Assuming your computer still has the juice and space required for addl programs you want to check out Norton Utilities. it has a module called wipe info that safely deletes files: you do a drag and drop and it will do a complete delete. removing hard drive is a good option and assuming it is over 40 gig you might want to add it to another computer. in my experience, i have several computers with two or 3 hard drivers. once one is obsolete (too slow or small), i know i can bang it on a rock and toss it out.
