Eastland Mall is not making money. The skating rink is even closed there now.

Worried about what?

I grew up in Charlotte and Eastland Mall was a fave hangout while I was a teen. Ice rink, gameroom, and tons of teen-friendly stores.

Then I moved to Atlanta for college (and a few subsequent jobs). When I returned to Charlotte, I took my wife (then fiance') to Eastland *just* to see what it was like.

The whole place smelled of pee. The stores reminded me of the movie Mallrats (nothing was brand name anymore).

Now, about the surrounding areas...I have friends living up Central (near Merry Oaks Elementary) and they love it. Homes they bought back in 1999/2000 have almost doubled in value...this is because the 'hoods are being gentrified.

The question is, do you want to be a gentrifying force?? There are all sorts of debates around that (whether it is good for the indigenous community, your family, etc...). Can you deal with the security concerns?

All in all, Eastland isn't too bad. We aren't talking airport/paper mill/sewage plant problems. If crime is controlled, the area could make a serious comeback.

The streetcar is supposed to be extended to Eastland Mall around 2017. This will have the same effect as the light rail did along South Blvd. The first portion of the streetcar line for the east side of Charlotte is being built now along Elizabeth Avenue with the new construction that just started in the past month. When the streetcar is complete it will run from Betties Ford Road thru town out to Eastland Mall area. I don't think there is enough value in the old Eastland Mall now to justify any wholesale construction for that huge piece of property but the streetcar will drive property values up just like the light rail did along South Blvd. Now would be a good time to invest in a home in the area. The streetcar is different from the light rail in that it will run in the road with traffic.

Ahhh what planet ya'll from? The gov't sure as hell will tell them what to do. Its real simple: do what we tell you or for some reason you wont see a cop for days..

Eastland mall is CLEARLY doomed and this plan is awesome if you ask me.. this would be a HUGE boom for the east side. What they propose is exactly what that area needs.. which is really odd, I usually never agree with govt plans..

Right now the cost of demolishing Eastland Mall along with the cost of the new construction work that would need to be done could not be made back considering the values of what the selling prices would be. I don't look for anything to be done for several years, at least until the new streetcar work is imminent for the area. As long as the mall is generating enough income to pay the bills I think the owners will hold the property waiting for the areas land values to increase.

I think the city and developers are together on revitalizing the E. MAll area. I am willing to bet Eastland will be history in the next year or two.

I agree.. it can't really go the way its going without actually causing some serious problems. BUt as pointed out.. its gonna be pricey.. I think it would be worth a tax increase for the east side.. I will probably be shot for saying this. LOL

It is true, that is not a really good area to work, but don't pay attention to everything people say. I moved to Charlotte 3 years ago, and I was hired for one of the most dangerous schools on town, Barely by mentioning the school's name everybody will freak out. Of course, I see things that I wouldn't see somewhere else, but I am still here, nothing had happened to me, and I am still working there. I only take more precautions.
