We Sold Our House
It's a miracle!! We sold our house in California. It only took a mere 8 months and endless showings, but I'm sure I'll look back on it as a "character building" experience. We have a 30 day escrow opening today, so we'll be out just after Thanksgiving. The folks buying it are solid, "have lots of money but drive an old pick up" type of people, so we're pretty confident that this will be a go. It's occurring to me that instead of spending these last 8 months wondering the house with a gin&tonic in my hand, bemoaning the housing market, my time would have been better spent packing a few boxes ... Now I have 30 days to pack a 3700 sq ft house and 800 sq ft garage, while taking care of 4 kids and working. It'll get done ... I'm the type who owns as little as possible - hate clutter - so we actually have empty drawers and cabinets.
For those of you watching the RE market, we bought our house in June 2005 and sold it for more than we paid, which is pretty unusual in this market. Am I doing a victory dance on the front lawn?? No. Our profits are absorbed by fees, commission, and some remodeling work we did. We'll break even, and that's about it. I consider myself lucky to get that in this market. But over the past 10 years, we've done well in Cal real estate, so in the long run we can't complain.
Anyway, our plan is to have my husband go to Charlotte in early January to get settled at work and really get to know Charlotte and its suburbs. We've done lots of research and visiting etc., but there's only so much we can do from out here. Meanwhile, I'll stay here with the kids and finish the school year. Then we'll join my husband in June and we'll either buy a house then, or sometime soon thereafter. It'll be hard being apart for so long, but we think it will be worth it. Ironically, it probably would have been better to sell this spring, to minimize the time apart, but you have to grab a buyer when you can!

Congratulations Connie! I am so happy for you! Our home is still up for sale (So Cal) 8 months also. So hopefully our sale will be right behind yours. We are currently living in Charlotte though since I was able to land a job. Which is probably a good thing as at least we aren't counting how many fliers are gone everyday and not depressed that no one came by or called. We keep in contact with the realtor though. It was sad leaving everything behind though. Best of luck and keep us posted on the move.
