Moving from out or state. Going to be living in an apartment for a few months. How tough are the police on the 30 day registration requirement.

I would say it's a joke, we changed within the 30days, I know people who have been here over a year and still not done it.

It just takes the right cop to pull you over, or license check either or.

Just in seven days Huntersville gave about 39 tickets for either not correct inspection or improper registration from December 11th thru Decmeber 17th http://www.huntersvilleherald.com/news/crime_scene/ (broken link)

That's good to see Sunny. It burns me sometimes to go through the hassle of doing things the right way (registration, inspection, etc.) and seeing others skate by with nary a glance from law enforcement.

Default We actually got a letter

We let our inspection sticker slide on one of our vehicles the first year we moved back here, and we got a nasty letter from DMV that stated if we had not rectified the inspection check w/in so many days we would be fined - and it was some hefty amount - like maybe $200-250 or so.

I am assuming they are still doing that. Don't know what prompted them to review that info b/c we had not been stopped for any reason (i.e. traffic violation, etc). Maybe they just randomly audit but since then, we have tried to get our inspection sticker updated w/in 30 days of expiration.

Ok, I will be honeest, we didn't change within 30 days. We waited until our other state's registration was expiring before changing to NC registration. We also wanted to buy our house and move in before having to go through an address change on our information. There were no problems, but we never let our registration from the other state get to expiration.

Default Oooopsss

I got off track and was talking about the inspection sticker, not the registration/tag. If you have not changed your registration - gotten license tag and registered car - they would have no way to issue you some nasty letter about your inspection sticker.

Sorry for getting things mixed up by bringing up the inspection sticker.

I wouldn't take the chance, its not really worth it. But they usually check around schools, with Apts, you could say you are here only on a temp basis.

I've seen it be really hit or miss. If you can get it done in 30 days, do it. If it takes you a little longer, I don't think it will be any real big deal.

Just don't move here and not change it over. You'll get caught sooner or later for some reason or other. Not worth the hassle trying to beat the DMV. They always win.

Its a chicken & egg situation, since I'm told you need a NC driver's license in order to register your car here. Both my license and my registration have been good since I moved here 9 months ago, but now that my registration is ending - its prompting me to go get it renewed. All I need to do now is search for previous posts on here reminding me the proper hoops to jump through to find a DMV and make sure I get the goofy questions right for my NC car & motorcycle license tests. ;-)
