I'm coming down to Charlotte for an interview right after the 1st of the year. I'm hopeful to transfer to another division within my company (Parker Hannifin). I plan to bring my wife with me, and we would like to take a few days to look around for houses. Based on the research I've done over the past few weeks, I would like to start with the Union County area (Waxhaw, Indian Trail, Marvin, Wesley Chapel, and Weddington). I'm sure we'll end up renting before we buy, as it is difficult to decide where to live with just a weekend to shop around. My question is this, which developments should we look at for resales, or are we better off with a new house? We have 4 kids, aged 7 to 18, so schools are a major concern. My current property size on Long Island is 100 x 150, so I wouldn't want to go much smaller than that. Looking for 4-5 bedrooms. $250k range. Also, is Renting w/option to buy an option in those areas?

For the size of the home you are looking for, your best bet is Indian Trail. There are some lease/options -- depending on how long the homes have been on the market some sellers may be willing to consider this as well.

Have you checked out this website? http://www.co.union.nc.us/
On the right side of the home page is a drop down that has every Union County Office including public schools. There are some houses for sale in the Mineral Springs/Waxhaw area. On MLS these are on the most Southwest corner of Union County. We were out riding today and I noticed some for sale down one of the roads we toured. I am really amazed at the growth of this area. We saw one development that looked like it had a common horse barn and riding trails. Another development was just up the road from a golf course in your price range and there are several right off Potter Road between Waxhaw and Mineral Springs on a dead end road that will have practically no traffic. I hope you are working with a very helpful agent. |

I moved from Long Island in 2003 from Islip. I found it hard to get the size property that I had on Long Island unless I bought an older home or upped my price. You can find some homes where the lot may not be as large but still afford you the privacy and use that you need. When it really came down to it I realized that most of my yard in NY was just there to take up my week-ends cutting grass, seeding, watering etc..Most homes here have a large deck and thats where you will probably spend the nmajority of your outdoor time. 90% of the communities have theie own pool and play areas..

With a budget of $250,000 you can probably rule out Weddington and probably Marvin. Indian Trail would be a good area and closest to Charlotte, but the commute into Charlotte from Union County can be a bear. Very nice place to live though!
Good Luck! |
