Where are the places to avoid in charlotte?
Hi,
We will be moving to the charlotte area in July. After living in NY for 34 yrs, you get to know the areas that are nice and safe and the areas to avoid.
As I have a wife and young son, it would be very helpful to know what areas are less safe for them to be around. If you could describe these areas in terms of numbers on the clock around charlotte, rather than names of locations it would be very helpful. For example, I hear the 3'oclock location around eastland mall is a bad area (correct me if I'm wrong). In addition, if you could also include the nice areas to visit, this would also be very helpful.
Thanks

The rougher areas of Charlotte, you'll almost have to try to get to them.
Where in Charlotte will you be moving? That will probably help, too.

About my appreciation you are right, the 3 o clock is not at all a good area, but 5, 6 are pretty good.

As with many other cities, Charlotte has some good and some bad areas. However, with the growth rate in the city, there are more good than bad...

Stay away from Independence from where 74 becomes Independence, all the way to 485. Unless you are shopping there, stay away. Do not live anywhere near there.

I went shopping at Eastland Mall years ago just about on a weekly basis. I had not been back for a while, but someone told me something I have not been able to find anywhere else was in a store there. My dh went with me for the shopping trip. We did not find what I wanted and if he had not been with me, I would not have gotten out of the car. I would have driven through the parking lot and kept going. I was shocked at the activity outside the mall. No, it was not a nice place.

The most general areas to avoid would be east and west Charlotte. The only time necessary to be in west Charlotte is at Charlotte Douglas Int'l Airport. I can't think of any reason really to be on the east side that you can't find in nicer areas of Charlotte.
To be more specific, she could avoid most of Sugar Creek, Derita, Tuskaseegee Rd., Beatties Ford Rd., Albemarle/Central/Plaza/Shamrock/Eastway, N. Tryon St. from downtown to University, the East Meck High School area (Monroe Rd./Independence/Idlewild junctions), Wilkinson Blvd, Freedom Dr., and West Blvd. Someone else can chime in if I missed something. But for what it's worth, I have no problem driving in any of these parts of town during the day, although I am likely to be more cautious. I still may drive on some streets at night, but I wouldn't walk or get out the car. But like I said before, there is nothing in these areas that aren't available in nicer areas of Charlotte.

Except Cook-Out! So good! Although there is one in Concord and one in Gastonia. Ooh and the Bar-B-Q King.
Seriously though, carolina_guy has given a good summary of the areas that most people mean when they say east and west Charlotte.
