I do not understand how Charlotte would have lower rates than Raleigh or Greensboro. In the past, I knew the late Commissioner of Insurance, Jim Long. He said Charlotte's premiums averaged 25% higher than the rest of the state because of traffic density and vehicle crashes. NC currently has some of the lowest rates in the country. We rank somewhere between 6 and 8th lowest rates in the country behind states like the Dakotas, Wyoming, Idaho where you have to call ahead to schedule a wreck.
I was told in 2003, I think, that my insurance rates were so high because Charmeck had one of the highest incidences of carjackings and rear collisions in the nation.
I have not had a ticket in over 20 years and my insurance went way up when I moved here. And I have switched companies since then trying to find a lower rate.
Well, I pay $330 every 6 months for full coverage on a 2011 vehicle valued at around $9,000. This is much cheaper than the $700 every 6 months that I paid in Kentucky (on an older vehicle at that). At any rate, my NC insurance bill is comparable to my cell phone bill. I like that!!!!
Unlike almost all other states, in NC, uninsured/underinsured insurance does not cover hit and run accidents. Part of the lower price is getting what you pay for.
I know when we moved here from Buffalo NY, our rates went up a couple hundred
