We will likely be relocating into the Charlotte area. My husband's job will be located in Steele Creek. We go with mixed emotions. We love being right next to the lake (Michigan) and the community we have established here at home. We look forward to the better weather and better schools. Here is our bucket list of what we want out of a house/area/community we move into:
1) Close (one mile or less) to a town/city which we can walk/bike to library, coffee, grocery (would be nice)
2) Good Schools (we have three in elementary)
3) Cost of house under $300, with 4+beds and a yard that is not too big but not small.
4) Sidewalks and front porches are so nice in a neighborhood.
5) A house with character - liking anything 80s and older for character. Not cookie cutter new construction.
6) Less than a 30 min. commute to work for husband (Steele Creek).
7) Some diversity or an area that is not "stuck up". Ability to get involved in community and make a difference(I started a non-profit program and serve in government.)
Steele Creek area, especially over by Tryon is up and coming and unfortunately teeming with new construction. But it's a nice area to be in if your husband will be there as there are plenty of shopping, houses in your budget and communities with amenities. Also it's diverse and more so than many areas in Charlotte.
I will leave others to chime in as I know there are cute towns all around there that might fit more to your list. But be prepared to maybe prioritize that list in what are musts and what can be left off.

Any suggestions are much appreciated!
I'd suggest you look at Belmont or Fort Mill, both meet your requirements
You would probably love Baxter in Fort Mill. It is a newer planned community, but the houses are charming, schools are great and depending upon the home, you can walk to things. It meets many of your requirements - except price. It would be tough to get the space you want for that price point.
Being within walking distance of shopping, dining, etc and in a good school district will be a bit tricky around the Steele Creek area. Charlotte is a driving city once you get any distance out of Uptown. So, with that said, if you forgo #1, you should have several good options in the Fort Mill area. Bailiwyck, Beacon Knoll (although price point might be tricky), and search for subdivisions off Doby's Bridge - I know there are several older ones there.
Another thought, since you mentioned the lake, is River Hills in Lake Wylie, SC. Older, gated community right on the lake. Schools are not as good as Fort Mill, but I have heard good things about them.
Thanks for the suggestions. What about Matthews, NC? It looks to me that the downtown has a lot of amenities and old-town feel. The housing is reasonable. It gets rated high for schools as well. Anyone know the commute time from there to Steele Creek? Is there a good since of community?

It's going to be a longer than 30 minutes commute with traffic for your hubby. If that's okay, then yes it's a very nice place. Especially if you can get a house that backs up to a greenway there that can take you to downtown. (greenways are paths that connect up to parks and other greenways) We go to Squirrel Park there a lot and use their greenways all the time.
Commute however will be easily 40 minutes depending on the route you take and much longer if he works during regular hours and catch traffic.
