Carolina Guy thanks for your thoughts, but can you tell me how many years have you stayed away from charlotte ? What other states/cities ? I am not attacking here, but i lived over the last 13 yrs in San Jose/Phoenix/Denver and i did not see as much crime as here. So please check the outside world. That is one more thing, that i think people here dont realize. They think charlotte and NC is the world. Most of them talk everything about here than other places. Charlotte has a lots of pluses, but crime is a huge negative here. Unless i am proven wrong.

I just read an article the other day where Charlotte was rated second highest for property crimes.

Also, I recall a shooting at the Just Fresh in Dilworth a few months ago. It seems to me that the population explosion here in Charlotte is causing the same type of problems that Atlanta is now facing...

Again, a "domestic-type" situation, not a random murder. (Not saying that makes it any better for the families of the men killed, I just mean the general public was in no great danger from this gunman).

As a prospective Charlotean, are you very nervous about crime here like some of our other newcomers?

NCgirl, you have been active and you are giving good information. But murder is not the ones people are going to be worried about. The general property crime, i am not checking news and talking about crime. I am talking to tom , dick and harry in the few streets i am in or apartments i am in or communities i am in and gathering this information. And they are saying every day we met there is a robbery or gun point robbery or breakin's by cutting down door knobs and so on. It scares the living hell out of you when you hear a noise, you tend to look over to the door as soon as such a thing happens around your houses, you think your place might be next. So it is a caution i am trying to throw and not negative propoganda.

Murders, mostly there is a reason to them. If not for some random ones. But i am more concerned of some random guy entering my house by breaking in in the middle of the night or day.

I hear ya slowlazygc As I said in another thread.

We feel safe living here. That does't mean you will - only you can decide that.
I can't imagine moving to a new city (scary enough) and experiencing what you have. I can only offer my perspective. Over the past nine years I have lived in different apartments. I'm a very petite woman and I have lived alone for about five years. I have never lived in a complex that has/had the type of crime you describe. Car break ins - yes. I'm not saying these apts. are/were immune to crime.

I have a few questions for you -please don't take offense. How much time did you spend researching the complex/area you live in? Did you visit it at various times of the day or night? Did you ask the management about the area? Did you look at CMPD's crime map to see what has happened in the past?

Well, this is a pretty scary and upsetting thread...
Is crime really that bad in and around Charlotte? I never expected to read so much about home break-ins anywhere in Charlotte, and reading about home break-ins is the most upsetting of all. I know there is domestic violence and drug crime everywhere, but, robbers kicking in doors and cutting out doorknobs to gain entry is scary as heck!
Where do newcomers (like me) even begin to search for a safe/secure place to live? I can't imagine not feeling safe in my own home, whether it be an apartment complex or actual house.
Where do I begin searching.... which zip codes, which apartment complexes, which neighborhoods are ranked higher for safety and security?
Can anyone be more specific? Schools are not a consideration, neither is budget. I just want to know the safest, most secure area to live.
I am so excited about my upcoming move to Charlotte this month, and this crime thread is upsetting me to no end.
Any help in directing me to the safest areas will be so much appreciated.
And if no one feels comfortable posting their suggestions on the board please e-mail or send personal messages to me.
I'm leaning toward Birkdale Village, Ballantyne, Huntersville, South Park, Dilworth...or any other suggested places by you fine folks. My work location is South Tryon Street.
Sincerely,
Maddie Claire
P.S. Is there a shortage of police, or just too many criminals to handle?
