I am a new resident and an AA member. My wife is Jewish. My kids have never been to church before. I am looking for an extremely open place that can help me and my family grow spiritually. I am willing to travel outside the city. Any suggestions are welcome.

I'm a member of the Episcopal church - there are several around Charlotte. Every congregation is a bit different, but overall I find it to be very welcoming and warm; non-judgemental is a big deal to me. I go to St. Peter's downtown and I like it a lot: a very diverse group. Also consider the Unitarian churches. Are you particular about music? The Episcopal churches tend to use hymns, both modern and traditional (St. Peter's uses more traditional hymns), and from what I have heard, the Unitarian churches sometimes use more modern, popular songs.

(Please note that I have not been to a Unitarian church, I am simply relaying what I have heard from people I trust who have been.)

Good luck- please share the results of your search on the board. I'd be very interested to hear what you discover.

What do you mean by non-judgmental? Every person on the planet is judgmental. Your thread involves judging various churches. Wouldn't that make you judgmental?

Are there certain features or ministries you want? Married couples, children, mens' ministry, etc?

I'm assuming by AA you mean Alcoholics Anonymous? No one is going to "judge" a former alcoholic as churches are full of people with former substance abuse issues. No one should have a problem with you wife being Jewish as any smart person knows that Christianity was birth out of Judaism.

The thing with being a church member is that you cannot go to church and expect the members to be perfect. People are not perfect and Christians are not perfect. Christianity is a journey to become more Christ-like. Different people are at different stages along their journey. You can't be deterred by someone who is still "rough around the edges."

I don't know what part of town you want to visit but you could look into City Church.
