Hello everybody ,
My husband got a new job offer in Winston Salem, NC. Would be starting from December ,so doing some research on moving to NC .. Must say We are very excited to move to NC from Jefferson City,Missouri 😁
Here I have a few questions if you ppl can drop in your suggestions that would help us in making decisions..
We are a family of 4- me, husband and 2 lil girls ( 7yrs and 4 yrs)
Firstly coming from a small place like Jeff city,MO we are looking to stay this time in a more lively place with more things to do...
So we are planning to stay close to Charlotte or Raleigh so tht my husband can commute to work (he is ok to commute daily )
Like any good suburb to these big cities..after doing some research I am looking at concord,NC ..it's midway between WS and Charlotte ... Is this a good option ? How long will the commute be with traffic ?
Ok forgot to mention , we are looking for desi Indian-Asian community also as priority with good indian resta / groceries shops etc.
So can someone suggest us the best place to stay and commute to Winston Salem which is close to charllotte/ Raleigh ?

Also have questions on apartments , elementary schools etc ... But first I shud zero in the location to stay .
So pls suggest .

Thanks,

Winston Salem is about 1 1/2 hours from Charlotte, depending on traffic. Concord to Winston commute would be a good hour each way, that would be rough but I'm sure it can be done if you're husband is willing to pay the gas and deal with the commute. I wouldn't recommend that though. Salisbury is a good halfway point between the two cities, although it's not really a suburb of Charlotte. Salisbury is probably pretty similar to Jefferson City in size, but I wouldnt call it lively. Salisbury to Charlotte and Winston-Salem is around 40 minutes. Winston-Salem is a cool town, and often overlooked from those relocating from out of state. It has a very active arts community and their downtown has seen a big resurgence in recent years. You could easily head to both the Triangle and Charlotte for day trips from Winston. I Would recommend checking out the neighborhoods there unless you're really dead set on being closer to Charlotte.

I am confused...why wouldn't you just live in Winston Salem? It's a larger city of 250,000 - not as big as Charlotte of course but still has a lot going for it. It's got some great areas and colleges too! I just can't fathom living in Concord and having to commute to WS every day - such a waste of gas!! And honestly, I like Concord "okay", but it can be hard to tell where it ends and Charlotte begins. I really like Winston Salem for many reasons. Have you considered it at all?

Let me also add Statesville to the mix. It's worth looking in to.
I did the drive from Concord to Winston-Salem for 5 months and it nearly did me in. My car is fairly fuel efficient, and I was stopping for gas every other day. Some people do it, but it's exhausting and expensive. Winston has a lot to offer, and has really lovely suburbs as well. My boss at the time lived in Clemmons, and loved it. A coworker of mine lived in Statesville and did that drive. I'm not positive, but I want to say it was around 45 mins.

I agree. Actually, I would say Winston-Salem is probably the most underrated city in the state. Winston is really a great town and in a very nice location.

I'm sorry, but have you consulted a map? Concord is nearly adjacent to Charlotte, not midway. if you don't want to live in Winston Salem why aren't you looking at Greensboro?

Agree with the consensus that Concord to Winston-Salem would be a pretty long commute, and while they're not Raleigh or Charlotte, Greensboro and Winston-Salem are still pretty good-sized cities.

But if your husband really is okay with an hour or more commute and the Indian community is important, I think you might find a larger Indian population in the Raleigh/Durham area. But even an hour commute there would put you on the western side maybe around Hillsborough and I don't know if there's much of an Indian community there (seems to be more in the Cary/Morrisville area).

There's a pretty sizable Indian community in Winston Salem itself. I strongly recommend staying there itself instead of commuting from neighboring cities.

OMG - not to offend you kssowmya, but WHY won't you look at Winston Salem??

It's a MUCH nicer place to live than Greensboro or Concord in my opinion. Plus there is an Indian community there near the Wake Forest campus!
