Not sure if it was mentioned before (I noticed the backup has moved down by Johnston/521 also) but I'm wondering if part of the issue is the ramp to Johnston comes up very abruptly. The long feeder lane it used to have is blocked with orange barrels......but is this the part that was mentioned wouldn't be completed until the spring?

They should have added an auxiliary lane between the Johnston exit and the NC 51 exit, like they did on the other side. This would have eased traffic on the general purpose lanes.
What's with the lane drops at the exits here. People just race down the exit lane and cut back into traffic backing things up...better not to keep adding and dropping lanes...
Afternoon outer problems are now starting just before Johnston/521 exit with rubber banding in outside lanes. Rubber banding continues until a dead stop where 3 lanes go to 2 lanes at Rea. The 3 lane to 2 lane problem is compounded by the Rea on ramps (southbound and northbound) merging to the 2 outer lanes. Speed picks up again slowly after Rea northbound on ramp.
It's telling how behind they were in reality to the number of commuters. I also can't see how I-77 can sustain itself with just 3 lanes for the next 10 years. That is going to be one huge mess no matter which way you look at it.

NCDOT doesn't know what to do about 77 between Uptown and the SC border yet. The way it was designed would require over $1 Billion just to add 1 lane in each direction. I guess no one had the foresight to predict Charlotte's growth. Either that or they were just being cheap when they designed it.

There is some traffic on 485 eastbound at rush hour (by Johnston Rd), however nowhere as bad as it was previously...
In the a.m., westbound on 485 is flowing alot better.
I don't think the widening was the magic pill, however it has helped make the commute go quicker...
(disclaimer: I normally don't travel 485 at peak times usually, however I have been lately mainly to judge how the widening has affected the traffic)

When I lived in southern California, I used to hear the same about I-5. Orange county was mostly orange groves when it was built. Caltrans eventually ended up putting "OK to drive on shoulder" signs on the L.A. side leading into Orange county, because there was no room to widen it any more.
I think the NCDOT is doing a great job on Independence Blvd. It will take them over 25 years to do 8 miles.
Try going down Independence pass WT Harris Blvd. going to Matthews at rush hours(days). NCDOT does about two mile + every 8 years. Independence was started before I485.
The NCDOT has built over 55 miles around Charlotte in less time, even with the delay of completing I485 until this spring.
Also they have widen I485 from Rea Road to I77 in little over 2 years.
