I wonder if anyone has opinion of which of the NC places are best. I do not expect anything Vermont of Rocky style, but it would be nice to go for a short escape on slopes as well. Any hints appreciated.

Folks generally seem to like Sugar and Beech the best, but I've also heard good things about Appalachian (smaller). Mostly I hear of folks going to the Boone area rather than the Asheville slopes, but Cataloochee might be worth checking out.

Sugar, Beech, Appalachian .... Sugar is by far the funest.

If you get up real early, you can get to Winter Place from Charlotte in 3.5 to 4 hours.

I skip NC altogether.

It's Snowshoe or a plane ride for me...

I like Winterplace - an easy 3 hour ride all by interstate:

Of the NC areas, I prefer Beech. For an overnight trip, Snowshoe.

There is a few city-data members discuss who frequent the slopes all winter since they live in that part. They discuss what is going on the slopes in this thread
How's the skiing in Western NC?

This link will give slope and snow information of ski areas in this state

We went last year in February and the crowds weren't too bad, and it was on a weekend. If y'all are willing to show up early (like when the mountain opens) you should have an hour or two of relatively low crowd numbers before folks start showing up.
