Hello Union County Moms and Dads!
We are making a move to the Charlotte area and have heard wonderful things about the Union County public schools. We have a 4 and 6 year old, so the elementary schools are obviously important to us. Can anyone compare/contrast the above schools. Is one better or worse for any reason? All 3 seem to get high ratings, but what is the school spirit and vibe like - from the students, staff, and parents? We are looking to possibly build a new home, but would like to keep our budget under $850K. Can you recommend any family-centered neighborhoods, ideally with pool and tennis amenities, in these school districts? Many thanks.
I have friends in all three, and they are all quite happy with their schools. I never hear a bad thing. Teachers all sound great, and Marvin Elementary has Mandarin immersion if that is something you are interested in.
There's so many options for neighborhoods. What I've noticed down here is that developments that are still building almost always have a lot of children. Lake Forest is in Weddington is still building in a cute area of the neighborhood, not sure of the names of other neighborhoods still building as I live a bit more East of there, but there are a ton.
Also you (or your wife if you're the dad) should check out UnionCountyMommies.com to meet people. You can ask questions about schools and other things there too. Good luck with your move!
Thank you for all of your thoughts and comments. We are also looking for a gated community (sounds silly - but it gives an added sense of security when my husband is travelling for work). Are Skyecroft or Providence Downs South known for having easy-going, kid-friendly neighbourhoods? Can you suggest any other gated communities that are full of young children and have tennis and swimming amenities, possibly some walking trails? Thanks again.
Marvin Creek is gated, but I believe they keep their gates open right now. I think I've heard rumors that they might close them. I know there are kids in Providence Downs South, but I have never met or heard anything about Skyecroft. Then again, I live in Wesley Chapel so that doesn't mean anything.
Another option is Quintessa if you're willing to consider farther east. They were recently redistricted to Sun Valley which has upset many people though. But I adore the homes in there.
First, Marvin ES and Sandy Ridge are both elementary schools that feed into Marvin Middle and High School. I don't believe there are any gated communities that feed into Sandy Ridge. PDS feeds into Marvin ES and there is a new gated community that is being built called Ladera. I don't think it will have amenities since it will be fairly small.
The Mandarin Chinese immersion class is not adding new classes anymore. The new principal at MES does not like the program so only the 2 current classes are left.
As to the safety aspect of a gated community, it is a false sense of security. If someone wants in, they just wait for a car to drive through and then follow it in. Neither PDS nor Skyecroft have fences around them.
You may want to check out some of the lower-end homes in Longview, which feeds into Marvin's Rea View Elementary School but is a high-end golf community with million-dollar homes, security gates, and amenities.
Also, not gated, but a lovely community with golf, pool and tennis is Firethorne.
There are some subtle differences among the clusters you mentioned. Both are excellent when it comes to academics, but Marvin seems to have a more intense vibe.

Good luck.
Somersmom- PDS feeds into Sandy Ridge not Marvin.
Also where did you get information that the Mandarin Immersion Program is ending? Is this gossip or do you have concrete info?
