I live in Houston work as a programmer for a prominent government agency and am think of making the move to Charlotte. How is the IT industry there? Is it in abundance? Is it pretty competitive?

If all you can do is write application/web code in Java or similar, then forget it. You will be competing against labor in India if you try to work for the private sector. If you have skills in microcode, advanced/enterprise networking, security, anything IBM mainframe (Z) related, change management/testing, large scale software deployment, then you can most likely find a job.

Exactly. The days of mass off-shoring and companies like Cognizant flooding the market with cheap foreign labor are over. I'd say any skillset that is good enough to find work in Houston is good enough to find work in Charlotte.

The banking industry is huge in Charlotte, and in NC in general. Thus the emphasis on IBM mainframe, which is a typical back end system for financial services. Among the banks with headquarters or major presence in NC:
Bank of America
BB&T
Deutsche Bank
Wachovia
Wells Fargo
So you might want to look at the open jobs for NC banks OP, and see what skills they seek.

Umm Wachovia is no more that is Wells Fargo, there are other large financial institutions like TIAA Cref. Also to add onto banks you have large company headquarters like Lowes, NuCor steel, Sonic Automotive, Nascar teams, Red Ventures, Rack Room Shoes, and Duke Energy the largest energy company in the country. HP has a decent sized building in the University Research Park, EPRI, and Electrolux are in there also.

Multiple programs? Almost every piece of software these days uses some form of SQL to interact with databases. I think it would be more difficult to find a software application that does not use SQL.
