Hi!

My family and I will be relocating to Charlotte at the beginning of next year from South Africa.

I need some advice on where to look for fully furnished apartments that are fairly reasonable, in a safe area, close to matthews area as that is the area my husband will be working in.

I also need some advice on where to look for daycare or preschool for my two daughters. Their ages are 13 months and 2 years and 4 months. I would like something close to Matthews, preferably 3-5 days p/week, and also fairly reasonably priced (not $200 p/week).

If anyone has any info on where to start or where to look please let me know!

Thanks!

Sorry to tell you but you should expect daycare costs to be about $250 a week for one child, not sure what the costs would be for 2.

In addition, apartments do not often come furnished in Charlotte. Those that do are corporate type apartments meant for short-term use, not real full time living, and they will be expensive.

Have you had a chance to visit Charlotte yet? I presume you do have jobs already lined up, is that correct?

Will both of you be working full time?

Daycare and preschool costs are not cheap. You will most likely be looking at $1,500/mo for two children, possibly more. I paid this amount back in 2006, so it may be higher now.

Daycare and preschool are two different beasts. Daycare is more for the working mom, five days a week, full day programs. Preschool is going to be a few mornings a week and you can plan to spend $600-$800/month for both girls. Church based preschools will be the most reasonably priced and you'll find a wide range of curriculum, from very secular to very churchy; and also from very school-based to very play-based. You'll be able to cut out a few preschools right away because they won't take kids under two.

I don't have children here, but I know several folks that do. They do take younger ones. If nothing else, you can get a starting idea of costs:

Carmel Baptist Church

If you need full day care but only for a few days a week, you may be best served by a nanny.
