Family-friendly Neighborhoods

My family and I may be moving to the area this summer. I am currently working with a teaching program that may place me in this area for the 2008-2009 school year. Possible areas of placement are Houston, Jacksonville, Charlotte, and Miami.

We are a family in our 30ís with three daughters ages 8, 5, and 1. We currently live in Indiana, but we have lived in Jacksonville, FL, Melbourne, FL, and Hampton, VA in previous years. We are looking for a family-friendly area / neighborhood with affordable housing. At first, we will want to rent a home of 3-4 bedrooms 1.5 + bathrooms, preferably 1600 + SF. Rent rang up to $1,200 max, preferably less than that. We currently live in a 4 BR, 2.5 BA on 3 acres with an in ground pool. Of course, we understand this is not going to be the case there, at least not renting at first.

Any suggestions on neighborhoods, schools, areas that are best for our family?

Thanks to all!
