Monroe bypass hearing set for Tuesday | CharlotteObserver.com

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the N.C. Division of Water Resources have scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday on the environmental impacts of the proposed U.S. 74 bypass in Union County.

The bypass would be a toll road, extending from near Interstate 485 at the Stallings-Matthews line eastward to between Wingate and Marshville – about 20 miles. Development and construction of the roadway has been delayed by a series of challenges by environmental groups.

I'm not real familiar with the area, is this a much needed thing? Seems like if they are proposing something in union county, they need wider or more roads in and out of Weddington/Wesley Chapel/Waxhaw to Charlotte.

It's desperately needed. Its an alternate route to the existing US 74 that bypasses all the congestion in Union County. It parallels the existing 74 to the north and bypasses Stallings, Indian Trail, and Monroe. It starts at 485 in Mecklenburg and reconnects with 74 near Marshville. It will be a totally limited access freeway.

I will second the need for the Monroe bypass. Union County is growing and infilling. Many signalized intersections along the way makes commuting to Rockingham and Wilmington longer.

Is there discussion or plans already for a Wadesboro bypass in Anson County?

I don't know much about this but just wanna ask. I hear people saying to fix 74 but wouldn't that mess with business that near 74 in that area. Second I didn't know that it didn't have any type if freeway\interstate going through it. Anyone from union county against this project?

Several of the people living near or in the path of the proposed construction are against it. Which is completely understandable. I believe most would be on their position. A vocal group in the Waxhaw/Marvin area, which I don't understand. It won't affect them. This road is long overdue.

Like the Winston-Salem Beltway, the Monroe Bypass has been unreasonably delayed by protracted litigation. The courts should expedite the litigation to bring finality to this matter. The Monroe Bypass is clearly needed and construction should have been completed by now, instead of awaiting the outcome of yet another legal roadblock. Also, the bypass should be extended through Anson County and Wadesboro and cojoined with the Rockingham Bypass.

So with the project are they seeing it as a urban/rural thing. I mean I've been on 74 before and its horrible so I can only imagine the commute from union to charlotte. I for one wouldn't want to see what happened on mecks side on 74. Just a complete wasteland. I just don't wanna see any business be torn down but if they widened 74 in union wouldn't that happen.
