I'd look at Meet-ups.com and see if there is any group that appeals to you. The groups range from "Former New Yorkers," various craft groups, book clubs, cooking groups and wine tasting groups to mention only a few.
I've met people throiugh CPCC craft, language and cooking classes. Williams-Sonoma also offers cooking classes at Birkdale.
