Charlotte Meck is the highest paying PD in the area, but they will require you to go through the entire police academy, even if you come certified from another state. Gastonia PD is probably the second highest paid in the area and if you are certified out-of-state you only need to go through a 96 hour comparative compliance course. Most agencies in NC do the same thing and you have a year from your start date to complete the 96 hour course. All of the agenices have their own websites and most will post salary info. When you start your search make sure to ask about health care costs because it is very high and may vary by a few hundered dollars a month per agency. Coverage for yourself will be inexpensive, but if you want to add your spouse or children it can get very pricey. Good luck with your search.

Charlotte is the highest paid as the above poster stated. There are several smaller agencies dotted around the area that start off their pay close to Charlottes but it is much slower to advance. Charlotte also does not give take home vehicles unless you are on a special team like SWAT or H.I.T.S, or a Sgt. Butmost smaller agencies do offer take homes.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol pays well (NCSHP). The Highway Patrol in NC is not a state police agency, as many mistakenly call it "NC State Police" -there is no such thing. The difference is that NCSHP primarily focuses on enforcing traffic laws. They work wrecks and enforce traffic laws in areas not incorporated by a local agency. You will not see a NC state trooper showing up to take a larceny report or on a domestic call. So if you like traffic and go with them. Maximum age is 39.

NC Dept of Corrections Im not sure about.

SBI -State Bureau of Investigation is hiring.

A.L.E - Alcohol Law Enforcement is a state agency. And as you might have guessed focuses primarily on enforcing alcohol laws, tobacco laws, and the lottery laws. Pretty good job as agents in the field are plain clothes and do alot of undercover work at concerts and gas stations ensuring no one under age is being sold alcohol or tobacco.

Default Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD

At the time of Dave037's response - it was mostly correct in stating that we require officers to complete our Academy. For in-state laterals, we used to require that they attend parts of the training, but the parts were spread out over the course of our 6 month training program.

We have now created an "In-State Lateral Academy" with is 3.5 weeks long, and includes all of the training and information an officer will need to begin service the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. Our next In-State Lateral Academy starts on September 8th.

Out-of-state laterals are more tricky because the state of NC determines what training an officer needs to transfer their certifications. We are still looking to refine this process to make it easier for out-of-state officers to quickly and painlessly transfer to our department.

I would encourage you to visit CMPD.org for more information, or contact our recruiting section at 704-432-1603 locally or 1-877-525-6145.
