I noticed yesterday they closed the southbound ramp and replaced it with a two lane right turn with a traffic light. The last two days it's caused major delays. Anyone know if this is permanent? I never had a problem with the previous merging lane to go south on 521. Makes no sense...

Two right lanes with traffic signalization is not uncommon. Increased traffic traveling south on Johnston Road causes merges to take longer waiting for traffic to clear and a line of cars needing to turn. The additional lanes will help stack vehicles turning.

The interchange needs improvement. First, replace the loop from Johnston Road southbound to Interstate 485 outer bound with a flyover ramp. Second, add a loop from Interstate 485 outer bound to Johnston Road northbound. Traffic signalization and weaving are removed.

I came through early yesterday (3:00 PM) and traffic was backed up onto 485. Hopefully as people become used to the new traffic pattern and the lights can get synchronized the major delays will subside.

I saw it yesterday morning and the traffic was backed up on 485 almost 2 miles just past the Pineville Matthews Road exit. I have not gone home that way yet this week but was planning today....maybe I should rethink it. I think changing it to a T intersection and forcing a 90 degree right turn with a light is going to make this a living hell. They build this 3rd lane to try and ease traffic, and decide to do this? Now you have the 3rd lane still not serving any purpose if cars will just be sitting on 485 for miles. I'm hoping this is a temporary setup and it's only for a few days to allow all the repaving they look to be doing.

It's a total mess during the pm commute. It looks like they are widening the existing right lane merge...Johnson Rd through Ballantyne south is a total zoo...what will it be like 5 yrs from now

Eventually it looks like there will be three right turn lanes and two left turn lanes. If they will extend the exit lanes onto 485 some I actually think it will be ok. Now, you don't have to deal with all the people that speed down and try to get in front of you at the light, causing more delays. Once I got onto the off ramp, I thought it moved quite well yesterday.

I don't know if there was an accident on Johnston last night around 6, but that exit was backed up for MILES. Other lanes going past it were fine. What a mess.

There was an accident on the overpass over Hwy 51. When I got there at 2330 there were still 5 cop cars and an ambulance there.

Once they open up the overpass on Community House Rd it should alleviate some traffic in that area.

When I used to work in South Park and had to take 521 south in the evenings there were a few times I almost got hit by cars coming off of 485 onto 521 and trying to cross over to the far left two lanes before the light. Then you also have cars doing the same to make the right onto Ballantyne Commons.

It's a tricky intersection with people speeding off of 485 and people speeding down Johnston Rd which is probably the reason for the light.

Does anyone know or have any info on when that Community House Road overpass will open? A while back I heard Jan 31. It's now April.
