If you want a commute in the 20 minute or less range then you'll have to look closer to Uptown. Keep in mind that Uptown & it's surounding area is the largest employment center in the metro & is also the cultural/entertainment center. So you alit of people coming in&out of Uptown most of the day. It is also home to both CMC &Presbyterian main campus

Thanks for the tips, folks.

I really liked Union County, and I liked the area by Blakeney, but figured that Huntersville was a better commute. It seems from the responses here that outside of a small area within a five Mile radius of Uptown, that pretty much everywhere north or south of Uptown has a 35 to 40 minute commute.

Presumably, when the toll lanes are built on 77, the commute from Huntrrsville will be pretty good (at least for those willing to pay), whereas Providence Road and Read Rd within 485 will always be jammed.

Where are you coming from that you feel that 20 minutes is doable? I'm curious as to whether you're coming from a smaller metro or if you're used to heavy-duty rapid transit.

You could probably have a 25 minute commute from some addresses in Belmont. If you really don't want to surpass 20 minutes, look at housing very close to CMC. There are some lovely houses right there.

Thanks. I'm from NY. I currently have a 1 hr and 20 minute commute by train and subway.

I hoped that commuting would be easy in Charlotte since it's not noted for traffic like LA, DC and Atlanta are, and since it's a lot smaller than those cities. I guess my assumption was wrong.

Here's the fallacy in that. First, the Atlanta metro is larger than the Charlotte metro, but Charlotte is a larger city. Second, most people rely on cars here.

The 74/85 corridor west of Charlotte has lighter traffic because people split up between the interstate & the highway. Like I said, I'm one hour door to door from CMC. I'm 30 miles out. You simply cannot walk out the back door, drive to CMC, park & walk through office door in one hour in rush hour if you are 30 miles north or south of Charlotte. That's not happening.

I came here from South Jersey where public transportation is minimal. I understand the difference in rush hour timing. I'm not trying to tell you where to live, but I won't lie about travel time. I've seen posters state travel times that I know can't be right & I have called them on it because it's not fair to OPs. I don't think that anyone on your threads is spinning you stories.

I once called out a poster who swore that her husband was driving to CMC from Mooresville in 20 minutes. I pressed her & when I told her that I couldn't make the trip from Kings Mountain in 30 minutes, she did have to confess that he drove over the speed limit at 4:30 or 5 in the morning.

Really, if 20 minutes will make you happy, look at what's available right there near the hospital.

Thanks, but aren't the schools to the west and east not as good as ones in Huntersville and the Providence corridor ?

There are good & bad schools everywhere. I know that you don't want to be here in Kings Mountain but I'll use it as an example.2 of the 4 elementary schools have been named Blue Ribbon schools. The high school made a national list last summer. I think that it was US News.

Gaston county's magnet high school, Highland Tech, is one of the best in the state. Cramerton Middle School is very good & it feeds to Stuart Cramer HS. It's a new school & hasn't been open long enough to have 4 grades. If you do a search for Cramerton Middle, you'll find a recent thread where a poster tells which elementary schools feed to Cramerton Middle. His children are in that group of schools. He is a Charlotte native & moved to Gaston County from one of the better school groups in Charlotte
