I grew up in NJ. When I moved to MS I was asked the church question. I was ignorant of the motives of the individuals who asked me that and was somewhat indignant. After being invited by a friend I met in the neighborhood, I finally attended a small Southern Baptist Church. I heard the Christian gospel and in time, after much resistance and questioning, I became convinced of the truth of the message and the love of God for all who would receive Him. Based on my experience as a believer, I can tell you that Christians typically invite people to church because of a genuine concern about the eternal destiny of other people, not because they are trying to get others to join their social networks or inflate the church rolls. I would count it a priviledge to be asked. A true response is alway best, as it might open a door for your daughter that she would be forever grateful. I am glad I was asked, even though I mocked belief in God when I was young and had all the answers.

I've been here 10 months and have been asked several times where I go to church. I've got at least 3 or 4 names and addresses of churches I could attend if I choose to.

This is a touchy area (as indicated by the repeated moderator notes) because like another poster said Christians are taught to share their "testimony" with non-Christians in hopes showing them the way to Christ. So sometimes it's not just a simple matter of searching for commonalities. But as a fellow newcomer to Charlotte...I 've been asked that question several times but in my case I politely replied that I had a church. And of course no one has ever been unpleasant or rude. But I believe that would be the same response even if I wasn't a believer who attends church regularly. Only fanatics are gonna harass people. And unfortunately fanatics come in athiest and Christian forms. Just be polite and say "Sory, I'm not a believer" and that should be the end of that.

People only ask where you go to church here because up north there is no reason to ask...everyone goes to Catholic churches
