Hello everyone-

I've been reading these boards a lot and have been noticing that a lot of people from NY (particularly upstate) do NOT like the Charlotte area and are interested in moving back.
That said, how are people from Long Island who have relocated been faring? Is it much different than LI? If yes, how so. We are planning on visiting in the coming weeks, but I was just curious. I keep reading about the traffic as a major issue? Is it as bad as LI? Is the crime as bad? Just curious on other people's experiences.
Thanks for any insights!

hmmm... maybe I haven't been reading closely enough, but it seems to me there are more people on here formerly from NY or NJ who have claimed they would never go back because they like it here so much. Sure hope some of them chime in to help you out.

No, the traffic is not as bad as LI. I am from NY and I don't see anything special about Long Island. There are some pretty parts, but you have to have a lot of money to live in them. I love NYC, but LI is nothing special. The Charlotte area reminds me of the North Shore. Lots of landscaping and more spread out. There really isn't anything like the South Shore here at all (which is for the most part a good thing). If you find yourself comparing the two places constantly your going to be unhappy. And don't sit here and whine that there is nothing to do. It might seem that way because you haven't become familiarized with the place yet, but if you look around you will find enough things to keep you entertained.

traffic can be comparable to the southern state parkway in certain areas at certain times, but on a whole its not even close. i lived in valley stream and massapequa, and where i live now (steele creek) it does remind me a little bit of long island, as far as lots of stores, restaurants, banks, shopping. long island has everything you need on sunrise highway and merrick road within a 5 mile radius, here you have all those things as well, just spread out a little more. i find i can do anything here i did back home within a 20 minute drive, clubs, bars, major airport, shopping, movies etc. crime is bad only in certain areas just like on long island, only here the areas are mapped out by numbers instead of the different towns we are used to on long island. the major difference i have found living here for almost a year is the people are much more friendly than on long island, and the driving is much less aggressive. 2 months ago i visited new york, and i there is no way i would ever move back, i now consider charlotte home, and i love it here.

We came from Massapequa Park a little less than one year ago. Traffic is not nearly as bad as Long Island, although it can be bad. Crime is non-existant where I've relocated (Indian Trail in Union County), but like Long Island (and everywhere else in the world)there are places that seem to have more crime than others. Do your research and try to avoid them. All in all, it is a far better lifestyle here than we had on Long Island and we would never go back. Best of luck to you.
