I am thinking about moving to Charlotte from the suburbs of New York and am preparing a cost analysis. One of the exorbitant expenses here is utilities. I pay around $1,000 per month in the winter and $700 per month in the summer.
What does it cost for gas and electric in the typical 3,200 SF house in Charlotte?
Gas heat? I'd say be ready to see some $600 bills in the winter for a house that size.
Living by myself I've been able to keep winter bills low. But for a while I had a roommate and was sharing an 1800 sq ft house, was seeing bills in the $350 range for a while. And that was several years ago.

Wow! What temperature did you have it on? Ours never went over $100 this Winter but we keep it on the cool side. I think the highest was 68 but averaging 65.
We have about a 3,000 square foot house house in Davidson. Hot water is gas fired. Everything else is electric (heat pump). We keep the heat at 68-69 in the winter, and cool to around 74 in the summer. Monthly averages for 2014 were: electricity, $141; gas, $19; water and trash, $53. Household of 3. The house is LEED Silver certified, so that makes some difference, but you will still save considerably here. Back in Connecticut it cost us $3,500 or so for oil each winter just to heat our 2,350 square foot house.

Something must be wrong with that house.
We have two gas furnaces (upstairs/downstairs), gas fireplace, gas soapstone fireplace, gas stove, gas clothes dryer, gas hot water, and we have never seen a bill for gas even close to that. I'd say that during the coldest part of winter, it's $190 at most. During the summer, the gas bill drops to less than $25.
During the day time we usually run the heat to 74 downstairs and let the upstairs warm itself. At night I'll let it drop to 67 but it automatically goes back to 73-74 before we get up. I am real diligent about keeping the filters changed and doing other maintenance items that affect energy usage.
If you like it extra cold and extra hot, is probably about $300 for gas and electric. About $100 for water for a family of 5.
That's with temps of 68 in the summer and 75 in the winter. And that's high end.
This sounds about right. I do about 72-74 year round and I think my average for the year was in the $200 range for gas + electric (gas heat) for a house just a little smaller than what OP said. On well water so no water bill but also contributes to the electric bill.

This is quite ridiculous....
I lived in a 4000+ sq ft house with gas (heat, water heater, oven, range) and averaged about $180-200 in the winter and about $25 in the summer.
Power bills ranged from about $90 in winter to about $200 in summer.
We keep our house somewhere between 68-75 degrees.
This is our first full year here, granted we're in SC so we have York County Gas, but I don't think prices will be drastically different than Meck Cty.
We have gas heat and a tankless (on demand) water heater. The highest our gas bill was this winter was $100 (when I was home all day on leave from work), we average $80 in the winter. We keep our house at about 68 - 70 degrees in winter. During the summer the gas bill was about $15.
For electric we range at about $45 - 50 in the winter (we only have one TV) and in the summer the highest was $120.
Much better than the combined $300 bill we got in NJ in the winter and $180 in the summer (we didn't have central air).
Pretty much paying 1/2 what we did in the winter and $30 less in the summer for a house 2X the size (3000 sq ft)
