The Volvo factory is a coup not just for the state but also for the Charleston area in particular, which has had a series of deals with luxury auto manufacturers. In March, Mercedes-Benz announced a $500 million investment in a new plant in North Charleston, S.C., that would produce its next-generation line of Sprinter cargo vans, adding more than 1,000 jobs.
BMW also builds sport utility vehicles in South Carolina, at its Spartanburg plant.

Adding up to 4,000 jobs for Volvo plus the thousands for Benz and Boeing jobs, it is good news for all of us since this will also trickle in benefits to Charlotte area as well. These mamouth investments bring along many thousands of supplier and support jobs!
Charlotte is closest largest city & airport to the new hot job area in Charleston. Let's hope next huge automotive plant investment will be on NC side!

So Phil Berger now says the state Senate will "debate" a new incentives bill in the coming weeks. WTF?! How about ADOPT a new incentives bill now, before we fall further and further behind. A small group of people are treating this state like it's their own personal banana republic, and the rest of us can just lump it.

I can't rep you again but you are absolutely right. Moore has brought numerous companies to this area. I wonder if Berger & Tillis (before Moore) brought anything to their districts.

Bob Morgan of the COC stated CLT is possibly missing out on 5 companies & 2,000 jobs . These guys need to get it together quickly

I'm well aware of the need for suppliers to a new auto plant.
We'll see. The state of South Carolina is giving Volvo a lot of money...you can bet Volvo will "encourage" its suppliers to locate close to the plant. Existing Charlotte area companies that get selected to a supplier may get some business, but as I said, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for new suppliers to locate in Charlotte.
Plus, I'm sure Volvo will use some of the existing suppliers that are already well established, serving BMW and other companies.
And Charlotte's population is completely irrelevant. There's plenty of labor in SC for suppliers.

I wouldn't assume that. Where are most of BMW's suppliers located? Greenville & Spartanburg counties. A handful have come to Gaston & Cleveland because they can play to BMW or Freightliner.

Greenville is 1/2 way between Atlanta & Charlotte, so the gravitational pull force is definitely making CLT the less favorite location. With Charleston things will be a bit different.
