i heard that Publix was going to purchase the shopping center that the kmart in Monroe NC is located in and thus the store is going to close. I was wondering if anyone knew if this was actually true.
I can see Sears Holdings closing additional low performing Sears and Kmart stores with expiring leases. I do not know if Kmart #7407 (2120 West Roosevelt Blvd Suite W, Monroe, North Carolina 28110-2713) or Sears #2008 (Monroe Crossing, 2115 West Roosevelt Boulevard Suite 200, Monroe, North Carolina 28110-2712) are doing bad. Walmart Supercenter #877 (2406 West Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe, North Carolina 28110-8409) appears to be constantly busier than Kmart #877 by the number of cars in their parking lots.
Food Lion #507 (2118 West Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe, North Carolina 28110-2713) is the same shopping center adjacent to Kmart. Food Lion stores struggle against Publix.
That area doesn't seem like it would be conducive to Publix's price points versus Food Lion. The Harris Teeter over there is one step above 'neglected'.
Harris Teeter #60 (Union Square, 1817 Dickerson Boulevard, Monroe, North Carolina 28110-5707) is dated. It is reminiscent of the late 1980's/early 1990's stores.
The only other supermarket competitor would be Bi-Lo #5607 (1642 Dickerson Boulevard, Monroe, North Carolina 28110-2764).
I would not be surprised if Publix is scouting Monroe and Union County for additional store sites. If it does announce plans for a new store, existing competitors would need to step up to remain competitive.

We have seen some posts on here about Publix working with developers in Marvin, Wesley Chapel, and Indian Trail (Sun Valley). Those markets are a bit closer to Publix's wheelhouse.
Is that BI-LO the only one left in Union County? I don't see how they're effectively servicing stores so far apart.
Yes, Bi-Lo #5607 is the lone remaining store operating in Union County. Bi-Lo has lost market share in the Charlotte region. I do not know if it may divest additional stores to Publix.

The Camfield store is probably too close to their Ballantyne store. I could see them buying and re-developing the BI-LO store at Park and 51 if the price was right.
Isn't there a Food Lion in the same shopping center? If that's the case, then it's most definitely just a poorly thought rumor.
