For BBQ (western style) Hickory House (or it might be called Old Hickory House) on North Tryon. It's a dive, but best BBQ ever.

I'll have to check out the pickles at the Penguin. Thanks for all the positive reviews.

Across the street from the Penguin and down a little is The Dish. Good neo-home cookin'.

fried pickles
If you haven't tried Fried pickles I would suggest Joe's Bar and Grill in Concord, George Lyles Parkway. They are dill spears and you dip them in ranch dressing!!! Delicious!!!

I'm partial to Vinnie's in Matthews. As seafood is the main staple of this restaurant, don't go if anyone has an allergy. I recommend the fried shrimp platter. Tuna steak is awesome as well. Not sure about the Matthews location, when it comes to grouper, but the south blvd location was apparently serving catfish and trying to pass it off as grouper.

I'd rather eat catfish than grouper anyway. The S. Blvd location has also received some low sanitation grades, but I haven't researched the Matthews one.
