Charlotte wins bid to host 2017 NBA All-Star Game | The Charlotte Observer The Charlotte Observer

Quote:
Charlotte has won a bid to host the 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend, the Observer has learned.
A formal announcement is expected on Tuesday, with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in attendance at a news conference. Charlotte officials and the Hornets’ organization formally made a bid for the event last summer.
In comments during a visit to Charlotte last fall, Silver said he thought it was a sure thing Charlotte would be awarded an All-Star Weekend after city officials agreed to various upgrades and renovations at Time Warner Cable Arena.
“Personally I’m very excited about coming back here. I don’t think there’s any question it’s going to happen,” Silver said in December. “Just a matter of what year.”
The city agreed last fall to pay for $33.5 million of what will be $40 million in improvements to the arena. The NBA saw those improvements as key to any All-Star bid.
The All-Star Weekend is in February. Specific dates for the 2017 event have not been set.
Charlotte hosted the All-Star Game once before in 1991 at the since-demolished Charlotte Coliseum on Tyvola Road...

Very nice. This should be big for the city and help out a lot with national exposure. Hopefully the Hornets will be able to at least field one player good enough to make the team.

Of course. But the biggest factor is the arena being uptown + all the new hotels + all the amenities uptown has to offer in terms of being able to create different events. What I mean by that is like when the DNC made. Certain sections of uptown different zones like protest zone, the kid zone, the presidential zone, the arena for the speech that was supposed to be at BoA stadium. Now we have Romare park & Knights stadium and Will have 1st ward park for more event space.

Mass transit also probably helped. We're actually a really attractive place to host large events due to the compactness of our venues.

It sort of sucks we got 2017 instead of 2018 because light rail and perhaps Gold line extension would be complete.

That $33.5 million investment should bring a decent return to the City as well as all of the Uptown businesses! I can't wait to be there!

Although Charlotte did host the All-Star game once before, it's clear that it's more and more on the radar for big, national events. Congrats to the QC!

with 200-1 odds (which are the longest odds of any team) on winning NBA title in 2016, at least hornet fans have something to look forward to..
