What areas inside the 485 loop south of uptown are safe and family friendly and what neighborhoods should we avoid? Looking at neighborhoods that are east of 77 and west of 16. Thanks!

Virtually that entire area, except for the far western edge very close to I-77 meets your criteria. Dilworth, Myers Park, Madison Park, Southpark, Sedgefield, Piper Glen, Quail Hollow and others are all nice, but also very expensive. Whats your budget? Thats one of the most expensive areas of Charlotte in which to buy a home.

We're aiming for $250-300k. I've been told that's the expensive area but have seen a number of listings so worried maybe they were in a bad area.

Olde Providence and Wessex Square would meet your criteria. Very nice neighborhoods both of them. I live in Olde Providence. It's quiet but with easy access to South Park or store in Ballantyne. 2 Libraries nearby and a small shopping center. Really a great location.

Portions of Sedgefield, Madison Park, Montclaire and Starmount all fit your budget and location well.

+1 on Olde Providence and Wessex Square. In my opinion, those the best you can do in South Charlotte in your price range once you consider size of house/lot, schools (much better than Sedgefield, Madison Park, Montclaire and Starmount districts) and commute (25 minutes to uptown or Westinghouse, 10 to South Park or Ballantyne).
